About the Activity
This is a simple physical activity which may help you free your mind by hiking around the village and surrounding forests. You will experience rural Japanese countryside landscapes and may meet local people on the walk. A real monk will guide you and share some stories from local history, of Shugendo and Buddhism, and perhaps even help you attain enlightenment yourself. The activity offers a chance to escape from your regular life and an opportunity for self reflection. A Japanese style vegan lunch box is included! Attention; -As the monk is still in active service, your booking may not be accepted due to work as the monk. Please wait for confirmation from us. -If the tour is cancelled due to bad weather, we will contact you at least 2 days before the tour. -Cancellations from guest side, please notify at least two days in advance; after 2 days, we may charge you cost of packed lunch. 24 hrs in advance, a full cancellation fee will be charged.5 hours

Shugendo is an ancient Japanese religion with links to Shinto and Buddhism and its main aim is to empower people to gain awareness and learning through experiencing nature, particularly mountains. This guided tour will enable you to catch a glimpse of Shugendo practice via the tour guide, a practising monk from the nearby Gokukuji Temple.
The walking tour is 8 kilometers in length and begins at the Hidaka-mura Tourist Information Centre before walking through a large wetland reserve by the Kusaka River. Once you reach the Gokukuji temple you will be able to rest and see some statues of Buddha. After this break, you will begin your ascent of Mt.Otaki, where mountain monks used to practice their faith. Throughout the trip the accompanying monk will offer words of guidance and wisdom from Buddhism and Shugendo, and you will have the opportunity to witness a demonstration by the monk of the conch shell trumpet. Once you reach the top of the mountain you will take a break to enjoy the Japanese style vegan lunch box. Prior to returning to the departure point, there will be an opportunity to enjoy some exploring the inside of the mountain during a caving adventure (additional tour). View Location

Hidakamura Tourist Information Center locates in the area of farmer's market "Mura no Eki HIDAKA". The nearest train station is Okabana station on the JR Tosan line where is 5 minutes walk to the information center. It takes about 35minutes from Kochi station by local train. View Location
