It's a small, brackish lake directly connected to the underground current that originates from the Katavothres sinkholes on the opposite side of the island, near Argostoli. This geological marvel means that seawater from the Ionian Sea enters Katavothres, travels thousands of meters underground, mixes with freshwater, and then re-emerges in Karavomylos Lake before flowing into the sea.
