In the Shade of Thalay Sagar: Trekking an Ancient Himalayan Trail
The Kedartal Trek is one of the hidden high altitude trails in Uttarakhand. It is not as popular as some other treks, but it offers a peaceful experience for those looking to explore the real beauty of the Himalayas. This trek takes you through forest paths, rocky routes, and steep climbs, leading to a quiet lake called Kedartal, which lies at the base of the mighty Thalay Sagar peak.
A Glimpse into the Route
The journey begins from Gangotri, a famous pilgrimage town in Uttarkashi district. Many people visit Gangotri every year to worship the Ganga river. But very few go beyond the temple and start the climb toward Kedartal. This route has been walked by porters, pilgrims, and locals for many years.
The trail starts with a steep climb and continues through thick forests of pine and birch. You will hear the sound of the Bhagirathi river flowing below as you walk uphill. As you go higher, the forest slowly gives way to boulder fields and open mountain views.
Trek Difficulty and Duration
The Kedartal trek is not an easy one. It is considered a moderate to difficult level trek. You need to be physically fit and have some trekking experience. The trail is about 17 km one way, and the trek usually takes 5 to 6 days, including the return to Gangotri.
The climb is steep at many points, and the trail crosses loose rocks and narrow paths. One of the toughest parts is the climb near the Bhoj Kharak and Kedar Kharak campsites. However, the reward comes with every step as the scenery keeps changing and becoming more beautiful.
Campsites Along the Way
Most trekkers stop at these main campsites:
- Bhoj Kharak (3,780 m) – The first rest point after a steep forest climb.
- Kedar Kharak (4,270 m) – A wide open meadow with a clear view of tall peaks.
- Kedartal (4,750 m) – The final point of the trek, where you reach the lake.
These campsites give you enough time to rest and adjust to the height. Camping under the clear sky with snow peaks all around is one of the best parts of the journey.
The Beauty of Kedartal
Kedartal is a high-altitude glacial lake that sits quietly at the base of Thalay Sagar, Bhrigupanth, and other towering peaks. The lake water is cold and still, often reflecting the snow-covered mountains around it.
Thalay Sagar, a sharp and black mountain, stands like a guard behind the lake. The sight of the mountain rising straight into the sky is unforgettable.
In the early morning, when the sunlight hits the peaks, the lake shines with shades of blue and white. Many trekkers just sit in silence, taking in the beauty of the moment.
Best Time to Do the Trek
The best time to trek to Kedartal is between May and mid-June and again from September to mid-October. During these months, the weather is clear, and the route is free from heavy snow.
In monsoon (July-August), the trail becomes risky due to rain and landslides. Winter months (November-April) are not recommended as the route remains closed due to deep snow.
Things to Keep in Mind
- Altitude sickness can be a problem on this trek. Take proper breaks and stay hydrated.
- There are no shops or shelters on the route after Gangotri. Carry your food, water, and camping gear.
- A guide or local porter is strongly advised, especially for first-time trekkers.
- Take your trash back and avoid leaving anything behind. This is a pure, untouched part of the Himalayas.
A Journey to Remember
Trekking to Kedartal is not just a walk in the mountains. It is a journey through nature, silence, and inner strength. The old trail, once walked by locals and explorers, still carries the feel of old times.
You may not find crowds here. You may not get internet or mobile signals. But what you do get is something more valuable the view of tall peaks, the sound of wind through the rocks, and the peace that comes only from being deep in nature.
Kedartal may test your limits, but once you stand in its cold silence under the shadow of Thalay Sagar, you’ll know why some paths are worth every step.
