The property belonged to the Prestons of Gorton and Craigmillar. In 1646 the Countess of Eglinton lived here.

This reservoir receives several streams, including the Gutterford Burn and Henshaw Burn and is the source of the River North Esk.

It is used for skiing, snowboarding and snowblading, and social use includes lessons for adults and children occurring all year round.
