About Het Schip
Het Schip housing complex is a world-famous example of the Amsterdam School. The complex in the architectural style of the Amsterdam School was designed by Michel de Klerk in 1919. It originally contained 102 homes for the working class, a small meeting hall, a post office, and an elementary school. It commemorates all gay men and lesbians who have been subjected to persecution because of their homosexuality. The Homomonument was designed to "inspire and support lesbians and gays in their struggle against denial, oppression and discrimination." It was the first monument in the world to commemorate gays and lesbians who were killed by the Nazis.
