Mt. Soledad National Veterans MemorialThe Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial is considered one of the most unique veterans' memorials in the United States. The present structure was erected in 1954; it is the third Christian cross in that location, the first having been put up in 1913. It is 29 feet tall with a 12-foot arm spread. The mountaintop is the site of the Mount Soledad Cross, the subject of a 25-year controversy over the involvement of religion in government which concluded in 2016. The 823-foot mountain[1] lies between Interstate 5 to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
