Mount Sneffels is a 14,150-foot peak in the San Juan Mountains of Ouray County, Colorado. The mountain is named after the Snæfell volcano in Iceland. Mount Sneffels is considered to be one of the most popular and scenic mountains in the state of Colorado. The first recorded ascent of Mount Sneffels was made by John C. Fremont in 1853. The mountain has been the site of numerous mining operations over the years, and a small mining town, Sneffels, once existed at its base. Today, Mount Sneffels is a popular destination for hikers and climbers, and its summit offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

The best time to visit Mount Sneffels in Ouray County, Colorado is during the summer months. From June to August, the weather is warmer and the days are longer, making it ideal for hiking and camping.

1. Make sure to pack plenty of water and snacks, as there are no services available once you start hiking.
2. Wear sunscreen and a hat, even if it's cloudy - the UV rays are intense at high altitudes.
3. Be aware of your surroundings and stay on the marked trails - it's easy to get lost in the wilderness.
4. If you see any wildlife, admire from a distance - don't approach or try to feed them.
5. This is a strenuous hike, so be sure you're in good shape before attempting it. It's not recommended for beginners.
6. Leave your dog at home . Dogs are not allowed on this trail because of the potential for stress on wildlife.

To reach Mount Sneffels from Ouray, take Highway 550 south for about 12 miles. Then, turn onto County Road 8 and follow it for another 6 miles. The trailhead will be on your right. From there, it's about a 3-mile hike to the summit. 

There is no entrance fee to explore this beautiful area. 

It is open every day from 9:00 AM. to 4:00 PM.
