About Red Mountain Pass

Red Mountain Pass is one of the most scenic mountain passes in Colorado. The pass lies between two mountain ranges, the San Juans to the west and the Cimarron range to the east. It is popular with tourists for its spectacular views and for its some 11,000 acres of alpine meadows, which are home to a variety of wildlife including bighorn sheep, elk, and deer. History of Red Mountain Pass

The history of Red Mountain Pass dates back to the 19th century, when it was first used by Native Americans as a trade route between the Pacific Coast and the interior of the continent. In 1876, prospectors searching for silver and gold discovered deposits in the San Juans, and soon after a mining boom began in the area. The need for a reliable transportation route to move ore from the mines led to the construction of a wagon road over Red Mountain Pass in 1880. This road became known as the millionaire's highway, because it was used by wealthy mine owners and investors to reach their properties in Ouray County. Today, Red Mountain Pass is still an important transportation route, carrying both tourists and locals alike through some of Colorado's most scenic mountain country.
