History of Coxcomb Peak

Coxcomb Peak is a mountain in Ouray County, Colorado. The peak is situated in the San Juan Mountains and has an elevation of 12,365 feet (3,765 meters). The mountain was named for its resemblance to the comb of a rooster, or coxcomb. The first recorded ascent of the peak was made in 1874 by a group of miners. The miners were attempting to reach the mineral-rich virgin claims near the summit of the peak but were unsuccessful in their attempt. The peak remained unclimbed for over 50 years until it was finally summited by three mountaineers in 1926. Today, Coxcomb Peak is a popular destination for hikers and climbers. The standard route to the summit is rated as Class 2 on the Yosemite Decimal System, making it accessible to experienced hikers. For those looking for a challenge, there are also several Class 4 and 5 routes up the peak. How to Reach Coxcomb Peak

To reach Coxcomb Peak, take Highway 550 north from Ouray for about two miles. Look for a sign for County Road 4 and turn left. Follow County Road 4 for about seven miles until you reach the trailhead parking lot. From there, the trail to the summit of Coxcomb Peak is about three miles long and gains nearly 2,000 feet in elevation.
