History of Wheeler Lake

Wheeler Lake is a reservoir in Park County, Colorado. The lake is named after John Wheeler, a 19th-century prospector and homesteader. It was created in 1932 by the construction of the Strontia Springs Dam, which dammed the South Platte River. The reservoir is used for irrigation, recreation, and domestic water supply. The lake has a capacity of 41,200 acre-feet and a surface area of 1,100 acres. It is located at an elevation of 7,000 feet above sea level. The dam is owned and operated by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Wheeler Lake is known for its fishing, camping, and boating opportunities. There are several boat ramps on the lake, as well as a fish hatchery. The lake is also home to a variety of wildlife, including bald eagles, ospreys, beavers, deer, elk, and bighorn sheep.

A daily entrance fee of $5 per vehicle or $2 per person applies during this time. Annual passes are also available for purchase.
