Jam Gate - 9 Things to Know Before Visiting

Visitors could enjoy a cool breeze with an amazing sunset or sunrise while having some snacks from local food stalls. The hilltop, and the valleys, all covered in thick greenery are mesmerizing. During the peak summer months, the grasses and the leaves of the trees in the valleys and mountains in the area will be burned to a dark orangish-brown colour.

The structure itself is historic and iconic but the attention-capturing part is the scenic beauty around it. The vast expense of small hillocks that you see around is just so beautiful. The road to the Jam Gate is especially eye candy during the rainy season with thick mists covering the region most times, opening up a few times every hour to show the beauty it hides. You feel that you are in the clouds.

There are also trekking routes from the base of the plateau that goes through the Jam Gate. While on these scenic treks through dense forests, the scenery keeps getting better and more beautiful as you start gaining height towards the gate.

The Jam Gate has an inscription stating that it was built in the year of 1,791 AD. The legend is that during the second half of the 1700s, someone named Ganpat Rao was stationed here collecting tolls from the travellers, horse riders and carts that passed through.

When the tax collection became substantial, he brought it to the palace to give it to queen Ahilya Bai. The Holkar kingdom was very prosperous under the rule of the queen, and Ganpat wanted to do his part in service to the government.

But the queen refused the money and ordered Ganpat to go back and spend the amount to construct a gate where travellers could stop and take some rest before continuing their journey. Her orders were punctually executed and that is how the Jam Gate was built.

Summers at the Jam Gate and the surrounding area can get way too hot and the heatwaves can burn you. It is best to visit in the rainy or winter seasons (June to February), the greenery of the area will be astounding to watch.

It is highly recommended to visit the place on weekdays. Weekends are super crowded at the Jam Gate with traffic jams that would keep you stuck on the road for more than two hours.

1. Rainy season is a great time to visit the place but be careful while driving on the curvy, slippery road.
2. It can get very crowded, with over 20,000 people during weekends.
3. The shops around the structure open around 7.30 AM and closes at 7.30 PM. So if you are here to enjoy some tea and snacks, reach out while they are open.
4. Drive safe as roads are curvy and there are countless blind turns. It will be easy to lose focus looking at the views resulting in serious accidents.

On average, Jam Gate is a very nice spot to spend around 2 to 3 hours climbing onto the top of the structure and just immerse in the breathtaking views around.

Jam Gate is located 50 kilometres from Indore. It takes around 1.5 hours to reach by taxi. There are also buses from Indore, in the direction of Bhagdara. Indore is well connected to the rest of the parts of the country through railway networks.

Jam Gate is accessible without any fee. If you want to climb to the top of the structure, there is a small fee of INR 10.

The Jam Gate is open 24 hours a day. A state highway passes through the structure.
