Prince William Forest Park was established as Chopawamsic Recreational Demonstration Area in 1936 adjacent to the Marine Corps Base Quantico. It is the largest protected natural area in Washington. It is currently closed to the public, but has been considered as a possible portion of the route for the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail.
