What travellers say about Mount Ijen
Unforgettable experience! Crazy Hikes, Blue fires and Sulphur miners..Worth it
It is inside a larger caldera Ijen, which is about 20 kilometres wide. The Gunung Merapi stratovolcano is the highest point of that complex. The name "Gunung Merapi" means "mountain of fire" in the Indonesian language. This world renowned sulphur mine is worth your visit if you ever set foot on East Java. Basic physical fitness is required during the 3 hour walk towards the crater. The most fun part is you walk in the dark which makes it extra memorable. The slopes during the journey can be pretty steep at almost 45 degrees. However for non active folks who like to experience this place can still make it by walking slower and stopping more often throughout the journey. One for the most eye opening part of this trip is witnessing the hardship of the local workmen. There are extremely limited jobs available to the village men hence many chose to work here.
