About Hessen

Situated in west-central Germany, The state of Hesse is bordered by six German states. Most of the population of Hesse lives in the southern part, in the Rhine-Main Area. The countryside is hilly and has numerous mountain ranges. Hesse is the greenest state in Germany, as forest covers 42% of the state.

Art Centres

Frankfurt's original opera house. It is now known as the Alte Oper (Old Opera). Alte Oper is a concert hall and former opera house in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It was inaugurated in 1880 and destroyed by bombs in 1944. It was rebuilt in the 1970s and opened again in 1981.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a landscape park in Kassel city. The park area is 2.4 square kilometers, and it is the largest European hill slope park and second-largest worldwide. Construction of the park started in 1689 and took about 150 years. The park is open to the public and it stretches up to the Karlsberg mountain with the Hercules monument on the summit at 526.2 meters (1,726 ft).

The Felsenmeer Lautertal is a massive field of boulders that covers an area of nearly 200 acres. Some of the boulders are as large as houses, and the entire field is surrounded by a dense forest. This fascinating geological formation was created over millions of years by weathering.

Frankfurter Kunstverein (Frankfurt Art Association) is an art museum located in the center of Frankfurt. It was founded in 1829 by a group of influential residents of the city and today it is situated on a gothic building from 1464 called "Steinernes Haus (Stone Building)". The museum has no permanent collection, but its contemporary art exhibitions are internallionally renowned.

Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt

This huge multidisciplinary museum in Darmstadt was founded in 1820 from donations of the local princely state's ruling family. The museum is especially noted for its art collection, and features an important natural history collection.

Hochheideturm is a 59-metre-high (194 ft) observation tower located in Ettelsberg. The northwest side of the building is the tallest artificial climbing wall of Europe with a height of 41 meters.

This is a public park in Wiesbaden center, stretching from the Wilhelmstraße to the southern borders of Sonneberg district and lying directly behind the Kurhaus convention center. The Kurpark was created in 1852 as an English landscape park, and it includes a lake with rental boats and a 6-meter high fountain.

The Marburger Schloss is a castle in Marburg, built as a fort in the 11th century, and became the Landgraviate of Hesse's first residence. The building is used as a museum since 1981, and as an event venue. It sits on top of a hill.

This 240 meters skyscraper in Frankfurt is named after the nearby Main river. The tower has five underground stories and two public observing points. It is the only skyscraper in Frankfurt with a public viewing observatory. The tower's design features what appears to be two connected towers. The smaller of the two is of a cuboid shape, a design common to 1970s architecture. The second and taller is a circular tower with an entire blue glass exterior which features the transmission tower on top.

It is a science museum located in Gießen offering a wide variety of hands-on mathematical exhibits. Albrecht Beutelspacher, a German mathematician founded it. The museum opened its doors to visitors on Nov 19, 2002. The purpose of the Mathematikum is to let people of any age, gender, and any qualification learn mathematics by personal experience.

Mathildenhöhe (Darmstadt Artists' Colony)

The Darmstadt Artists’ Colony refers to both Jugendstil artists and the buildings in Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt, where they lived and worked. The artists’ colony was established in 1899 by Ernest Ludwig, Grand Duke of Hesse. The Messel Pit is a disused quarry near Messel's village about 35 km south-east of Frankfurt. Because of its abundance of fossils, it has significant geological and scientific importance. This is one of the newest museums in Frankfurt and it's permanent collection comprises of over 4,500 works of international art, from 1960's to the present.
