Antelope House OverlookThe Antelope House Overlook is along the North Rim Drive in the Canyon de Chelly National Monument near Chinle, Arizona. Upon reaching the parking area, it is a bit of a walk across sandstone with some steps to reach the fenced overlook. The view from here is marvelous in every direction. The real fun of this spot, though, is the large, mostly flat sandstone cap of the canyon walls that invite exploration.
Blue MesaBlue Mesa is a significant landform located on a spur road halfway through Petrified Forest National Park. The trailhead for Blue Mesa Trail is located halfway around the loop road at a sunshelter. The mesa consists of the Blue Mesa and Sonsela Members with petrified wood deposits. Spectacular views of blue, purple, gray, and peach banded badlands.
Canyon de Chelly National MonumentCanyon de Chelly National Monument is within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation and lies in the Four Corners region. Reflecting one of the longest continuously inhabited landscapes of North America, it preserves ruins of the indigenous tribes that lived in the area, from the Ancestral Puebloans to the Navajo. The monument covers 83,840 acres and encompasses the floors and rims of the three major canyons: de Chelly, del Muerto, and Monument.
Casa Malpais Archaeological Park & MuseumCasa Malpaís is an archaeological site of the Ancestral Puebloans located near the town of Springerville, Arizona. The site is a nationally recognized archaeological site. The site features an ancient staircase, a Great Kiva, a solar calendar, and rock art. The museum features an introductory video with commentary by Zuni and Hopi elders and an interactive guide to artifacts from the site.
Face Rock OverlookThe Face Rock Overlook is located along the South Rim Drive in the Canyon de Chelly National Monument near Chinle, Arizona. The location is one of seven overlooks that are spread out along the south rim of the monument. There was only one lovely Navajo grandmother selling her wares at the trailhead.
Jasper ForestJasper Forest was originally called First Forest as it was the first large accumulation of petrified wood reached from Adamana. The petrified log segments continue to erode from the 216-million-year-old Jasper Forest bed, which caps the exposures in the area, including Blue Mesa, Agate Bridge, and Crystal Forest. The forest was originally accessible by vehicle and the old road constructed by the CCC in the early 1930s still exists.
Kachina PointKachina Point overlooks the red part of the Painted Desert, located about 2 miles from the north entrance of Petrified Forest National Park. The overlook is reached by an easy accessible trail behind the Painted Desert Inn National Historic Landmark. This is also the trailhead of the Kachina Point Trail which provides access to the northern wilderness area unit.
Mummy Cave OverlookMummy Cave is the name of the ruin visible from the overlook. With over 80 rooms and three kivas, this is one of the largest dwelling structures in the park. It was named for two mummies that were discovered here by an archaeological expedition in 1882. There are great views both up and down the canyon from this overlook.
Nelson ReservoirNelson Reservoir is a reservoir located in Apache County, Arizona between Springerville and Alpine. The Reservoir is a long and narrow lake which follows the Nutrioso Creek Valley for nearly a mile. Fish that remain in Nelson Reservoir after summer stockings can grow to good size, making it a popular fishing site with local anglers.
Painted Desert RimThe Painted Desert is a United States desert of badlands in the Four Corners area, running from near the east end of Grand Canyon National Park and southeast into Petrified Forest National Park. It has a beautiful array of colors from deep purple to verdant green, from dark rusty red to pale pink. The Painted Desert seems to go on for miles and miles into the flat Arizona landscape. You can walk along the edge of the Painted Desert for half a mile between viewpoints by using this trail.

It is most easily accessed from the north portion of Petrified Forest National Park. Thompson Trail #629Thompson Trail #629 is though one of the loveliest landscapes in the White Mountains. The trailhead is on a major forest road negotiable by vehicles. The trail is well-groomed and follows the West Fork of the Black River and remains always on the same side of the creek.
