The prison was used by the British especially to exile political prisoners to the remote archipelago. Many notable independence activists such as Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, Yogendra Shukla among others, were imprisoned here during the struggle for India's independence.

Gandhi Park Andaman
Gandhi Park is just the perfect sightseeing place in Andaman to relax, rejuvenate, and revive. The park has its share of history too; the Dilthaman tank in the park was once the lone source of drinking water in Andaman. A symbol of the manmade brilliance, the park has a big statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the center. Around it, there are few other historical monuments such as the remains of a bunker and a Japanese temple.
