This peaceful, historic monastery sits perched on a barren hill with the houses of the town nestled in around the base of the hill. A great view down to the monastery can be found from the hill behind that can be reached by walking out the back or by driving up the old highway. Inside the main prayer hall the original cave where the monk first meditated can be seen inside the building. Outside the monks and nuns are very friendly and welcoming.

The Lamayuru Monastery
The Monastery consisted originally of five buildings, some remains of the four corner buildings can still be seen. Lamayuru is one of the largest and oldest monasteries in Ladakh, with a population of around 150 permanent monks residing. It has, in the past, housed up to 400 monks, many of which are now monasteries in gompas in surrounding villages.
