About Elbe-Lübeck Canal
Elbe-Lübeck Canal is a German waterway connecting the Elbe River at Lauenberg with the Baltic Sea at Lübeck. The waterway, 64 km (40 miles) long, was built in 1895–1900 to replace the medieval Stecknitz Canal. The Museum Quarter is not far from the Aegidienkirche in St.-Annen-Straße in the south-east of Lübeck's old town next to the synagogue and includes the St. Annen Museum, the St. Annen Art Hall, and the museum administration in the outbuildings of the former monastery.
SalzspeicherThe Lübecker Salzspeicher are six historical buildings, wholly made of brick, that used to function as salt storehouses from 1579 on. Salt was mined around Lüneburg and brought to Lübeck over the Stecknitz Canal. From there it was shipped around the Baltic region. This trade was one of the reasons why Lübeck was so influential in the Hanseatic League.
