The dam and its reservoir, Maithon Lake, are popular tourist destinations, offering numerous activities for visitors to enjoy. Popular things to do at Maithon Dam include boating, fishing, swimming, bird watching, and hiking.

When the dam gates are opened and water is gushing out in full force, it is a mighty sight to watch. And during the October to January many migratory birds comes to this area.

Maithon Dam was constructed between 1953 and 1957 and is used for irrigation, flood control, and power generation. It is one of the oldest dams in India. The project was the result of the work of then chief ministers of Bihar and West Bengal, who convinced the central government to undertake the project.

The Barakar River on which the Maithon Dam is constructed is mostly a seasonal river. 80% of the water is filled up by rainfall between July and September. The stored water is then used throughout the rest of the year for irrigation and power generation. The storage capacity of the dam has been significantly reduced over the years due to the silt that is accumulated in the bottom of the dam.

Maithon Dam is particularly beautiful during the monsoon season. The best time to visit Maithon Dam is from June to September when the rains bring the dam to life. During this time, the dam is filled with water and the surrounding area is lush and green. Visitors can enjoy boating and fishing on the reservoir or simply take in the breathtaking views. The view of the reservoir during sunset is breathtaking.

Maithon Dam is approximately 45 kilometers from Dhanbad. Visitors can either take a bus or drive their own car/ motorbike to reach the dam. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes. There are also buses from the nearest townAsansol.

There is no entrance fee for Maithon Dam.

The dam is open daily throughout the year from 6 AM to 8 PM
