About Dhanbad

Dhanbad district was constituted in 1956 by carving out the old Dhanbad subdivision, Chas and Chandankiyari police stations of the Sadar subdivision of the erstwhile Manbhum district. Dhanbad is a Police district since 1928. The re-organization of the districts in the State of Bihar which took place after 1971 did not affect the district of Dhanbad. In 1991 a part of Dhanbad district was sliced away to form Bokaro district.

Maithon Dam

Maithon Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Barakar River in Jharkhand, India. The dam forms the Maithon Reservoir, which covers an area of 65 square kilometers. The dam is used for power generation and irrigation. As of 2016, the dam has a capacity of 60 MW. It is 4,789 meters long and 50 meters high. The dam has been credited with reducing flooding in the region.

Topchanchi Lake is an interesting tourist spot in the Dhanbad district of Jharkhand. Situated on the National Highway 2, it is located at the Golden Quadrilateral. Dhanbad Railway Station is 37 km from the lake and Bokaro is 41 km. Though the lake is an artificial one, its green surrounding amidst forests and hills makes it an ideal picnic spot. It is also in demand for sound and serene vacations. It covers a total area of 214 acres.
