This 400+ meters long, 100+ year old tunnel goes underneath the river Elbe connecting central #Hamburg to the port. There are four huge lifts on each side which once were used to move cars to and from the deep tunnel. Since the 70's, the tunnel has been used only by pedestrians and cyclists, the lifts still working. Walking through the tunnel makes you admire the engineering capabilities of humans, it's amazing to know something this complicated was constructed more than a hundred year ago. On the port side of the tunnel, there is a viewpoint where you can sit on and have some drinks looking at the various sized and shaped boats going through the Elbe river, and of the major buildings of the Hamburg city.
